Are you a completist? Do you just want what is not retired at this point? Outfits? Furniture? All items for a character including version changes (new clothes press and old clothes press?)
Lastly who do you collect for?
I am just wondering. I will answer my own question in another post but wonder what every one elses' philosopy is. It is also a good idea to think about these questions to curb future collection expansion. Though that does not work for me!

I collect all the dolls. Any doll that strikes my fancy hits my doorstep. After that, I just buy what I like. I try to have a place for each girl to sleep, but I really focus on clothes. The only accessories I really get excited about are the dolls' dolls.
I've made it my goal to get all of the outfits, accessories, and furniture for each of my historical and Limited Edition dolls. So far I have almost Molly's complete collection except for her Christmas Stocking, Christmas Box, Party Treats, Party Games, Chrome Table & Chairs, Plaid Suitcase, Winter Activities, Molly's Undies, Capture the Flag Gear, Bathing Suit, Dude Ranch Outfit, Embroidered boots, Miss Victory Costume, Halloween Hula Outfit.

I collect whatever I think would look the nicest on Josefina.
I simply get what I like. I'd like to have complete collections of all the outfits I like. Since I don't play with my dolls anymore, just change their clothes and play with their hair, I don't avidly collect accessories, I never did, really, even when I was younger and played with them.
I'm all about the dolls, clothes, and the clothes accessories. I really like the shoes, I love having 2 or 3 different pairs that match an outfit, so I can change them around often, even though I tend to put my dolls in the same outfits over and over -_-'.
I don't buy any not-AG clothes, (save for like 1 or 2 things cause they were really cute and mixable), because I'm not collecting AG to have a large collection of doll clothes, I just love AG, and want to have a large collection to share with my future daughter(s) someday.
Between myself, my sister, my DD and my nieces we would like to have all the historicals and each little girl have some sort of today girl. We are well on our way! I would say we then go for the outfits. We do have some accessories but the girls lose things too easily to concentrate there yet. Each girl(child not doll) has a bed and they should be getting their desks for Christmas. My sister my disagree with my theory - she lurks but has yet to post - maybe this will get her - LOL.
As of right now I only have Felicity and my goal is to own all of her clothes: new and retired. So far I own her rose garden dress, Christmas dress, birthday dress, school outfit and Ben's breeches and hat. I plan to get Elizabeth and all her clothes as well.
Someday when I'm not a poor college student I'd like to get all of Felicity's stuff: furniture and whatnot not caring whether its first edition or not. I also wouldn't mind owning Kirsten and Samantha and all their clothes someday.
As of right now though wanting Elizabeth and all the new clothes is a lot of money for me especially since I have all these other expenses coming up like books for the semester and getting my car's AC fixed.
I collect stuff for Josefina, and my goal is to have her whole collection (except for the stuff i dont like)
I also collect AGOT outfits and accesseries, its basically what ever i like.
